Campaigns and Awareness

Hate Crime Awareness Week is a national week (9^th October – 16^th October 2021) of action to encourage local authorities, key partners and communities affected by hate crime to work together to tackle local hate crime issues.
 
The countywide Inclusive Communities Joint Coordinating Group, formally the Hate Crime Working Group, will utilise this week, Monday 11^th October – Friday 15^th October, to promote and raise awareness on how to become an active bystander safely, to report Hate Crime/Mate Crime incidents, along with supporting projects and services available to those who may suffer incidents of Hate Crime/Mate Crime in North Yorkshire and the City of York. This is supported by the Safeguarding Adults Boards, Safeguarding Children Partnerships and Community Safety Partnerships. 
Representatives from a number of organisations/partnership have met to build on last year’s successful campaign in finalising proposals and plans for a coordinated social media campaign that makes use of and signposts to, existing resources.
 
As part of this #HelpNotHateNY2021 has been developed for use during Hate Crime Awareness Week 2021. As the focus is on raising the awareness of the role of an active bystander the following hashtag will also be used in conjunction #activebystander

Event organised by Staying Safe in York: Disability Hate Crime

This is our first meeting about disability hate crime. We’ll be joined by members of York People First (a self-advocacy group of people with learning disabilities) who will talk about their experiences and we hope to show a short film that they’ve made. PC Stuart Henderson from North Yorkshire Police will also be there to offer advice and information, including about how to report a hate crime if it happens to you or somebody you know. You will also have chance to share your own experiences – but only if you want to. We aim to have a supportive atmosphere in which to discuss this important topic and share ideas about how to tackle it locally. We look forward to seeing you there!

Save the date – Safeguarding Week 2021 (21^st – 25^th June)

We are pleased to confirm that a virtual, online conference will take place between 21^st – 25^th June to mark Safeguarding Week 2021.
Partners from Safeguarding Adults Boards, Children’s Safeguarding Partnerships, Community Safety Partnerships across at North Yorkshire, the City of York and East Riding have come together to develop an extensive programme of learning events, seminars and interactive sessions. The programme of events will be delivered virtually throughout the week providing ease of access for all attendees.

Developed for both professional and public audiences, the conference offers a packed schedule of sessions which will be delivered by inspirational and motivational speakers, all of whom are experts in their field. The professional sessions will cover key safeguarding areas and have been designed to stimulate discussion, share best practice, spark innovation and support continuing professional development.

Public-facing sessions will raise awareness of key issues and provide insight into how every member of the public can play a key in safeguarding themselves, their families and the wider community – reinforcing the key message of the week that ‘Safeguarding is everybody’s business’. The full conference schedule will be published shortly allowing participates to register for individual sessions.

Due to restrictions around COVID-19, a scaled back Safeguarding Week 2020 will be undertaken as a virtual awareness raising campaign.  Over the week (22^nd-26^th June) we will use social media to promote awareness to the public and professionals, to remind people that “Safeguarding is everybody’s business” and that concerns about abuse or neglect should continue to be reported to the Local Authority as normal during the Covid -19 pandemic.
 
Safeguarding Week 2020 will promote and raise awareness on how to report abuse of children, young people and adults, in North Yorkshire and the City of York and is supported by the Safeguarding Adults Boards, Safeguarding Children’s Partnerships and Community Safety Partnerships. 
Representatives from each Partnership have met to develop proposals and plans for a coordinated social media campaign that makes use of and sign posts to, existing resources. As part of this #TellUsYourConcerns has been developed for use during Safeguarding Week 2020.

The overarching theme throughout the week will be How to report a safeguarding concern. In North Yorkshire, each day will also focus on a different safeguarding area as follows:
